When logging on, I clicked on the box to update to the newest version of wealth-lab. It uninstalled my wealth-lab that I was using but when it attempted to install the new version, it was not able to do so. I get the message: Warning 1909. Could not create shortcut Wealth-Lab Pro 6 (64-bit).Ink. Verify that the destination folder exists and that you can access it. I have been updating versions of wealth lab for many years on this laptop without a problem until now.

How can I install wealth-lab pro 6 newest version.

You need to install WL (or any other program) from a Windows Administrators account, not your "standard" Windows user account. For security reasons, the standard Windows user accounts we use everyday doesn't have write access to the Program Files directory and other Windows kernel directories where the shortcut would be stored.

That was suggested by others too, but I have been signed on as Administrator, and it's not installing.

This is a new bug in 6.9.21. :( It may also appear as installer failing with a message like "Unable to save file: ...\Downloaded Installations\... Wealth-Lab Pro 6.x msi" at first, and then after uninstall / fresh install, as 'Warning 1909. Could not create shortcut Wealth-Lab Pro 6 (64-bit).Ink. Bug report has been filed with the development team.

So reading the solution link in Post# 4, that link in its own Post# 4 says the Administrator only has read-only access to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. And I checked on my own system, and that's true. The Administrators do not have write access to that directory. (That state must have been changed with a Windows Update or Install Shield script because I know I've put shortcuts in there manually myself.)

I wouldn't grant write access to that directory if Windows Update (or Install Shield) felt there's a security need to "recently" limit it. But I would follow what Post# 5 says in the same discussion. Add SYSTEM access to that directory and give it full access as shown in my screenshot. This was already done on my Windows 7 system, so Windows Update must have included that. Now I "think" you can rerun the installer successfully; if not, then grant write access to Administrators and run it again.

Too many Windows Update and Install Shield patches. :(

I appreciate the help. I am using a laptop with windows 10 that originally had windows 7 and the solution in post #4 worked. I was able clear the read-only attributes and get Wealth-Lab 6.9.21 installed, However when starting the program, the Login to Fidelity box appeared, but it was a black box without any place to enter my user ID or Password. When I closed the Login box, I received the message, Log in required, terminating. I uninstalled and reinstalled with the same results, see attached screen prints.
What can I do to login.

I downloaded version 6.9.20.7 and everything is working find, I am able to login but I did not click on the box to install the newer version of wealth-Lab. Thanks for getting me back to creating strategies,

The way I needed to download both versions of wealth-lab was the same, I had to select a file to save the startup file in, then when warning 1909 comes up, I needed to go to program files and deselect "read-only" for wealth-lab and after the install I had to create a shortcut for my desktop to start wealth-lab. Theses are things that I never did in the past. My Windows 10 and windows security are the most current.

You meant to say ...Start Menu\Programs rather than Program Files, didn't you? Good to know that the workaround from post #4 works for you.

No, I do not have a selection Programs with my window 10, I did in windows 7, the path was: C:\Program Files\Fidelity Investments\Wealth-Lab Pro 6. This is where I deselected "read-only".
But I did mean to say in the above; I had to select a file to save the WealthLabProSetup64 file rather than startup file.

So is it after clearing the "read-only" attribute in the Properties dialog of the folder "C:\Program Files\Fidelity Investments\Wealth-Lab Pro 6", when "Warning 1909" disappeared and you were able to complete installation?

The thing is, shortcuts (.lnk) are not created there but here:

"c:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"

This is what I did to install Wealth-Lab Pro.
I started to download WL 6.9.20 (64-bit). It prompts me to select a file to save “ WealthLabProSetup64” in. I chose a folder to save it in that I created C:\0WL. It will then continue downloading, when the download is complete, at the bottom of the, I clicked on the download icon and selected open. That will started the install process until I get to the popup “Warning 1909 could not create shortcut Wealth-Lab Pro 6 (64-bit).Ink. I did not click the OK box on this screen yet, in another window I Open C:Program Files\Fidelity Investments\Wealth-Lab Pro 6 and then right click on “Wealth-Lab Pro 6” to open a popup and clicked on Properties. In Attributes of this popup box I click off the black in box – Read-only and click on “select this file and all associated files”. Next I click on apply at the bottom of this popup. Next go back to the popup with the Warning 1909 and click OK, it will complete the installation. To start WL, I went to C:\Program Files\Fidelity Investments\Wealth-Lab Pro 6, inside the last folder is the WealthLabPro application displaying the blue-green icon that is usually on my desktop. I can click here to start WL, I also put it on my desktop by right clicking on it and creating a shortcut. This install worked completely for version 6.9.20.7 and I can also login. However in the version 6.9.21, it worked the same way, but when I it wants me to login Wealth-Lab I get the Login black screen. There is not a place to login, the user ID and password areas do not appear in the Login box. Currently I am using version 6.9.20 without any issues.
I hope I explain this correctly.

If the Install Warning 1909 occurs again, please turn off Windows Defender's Control Folder Access or other anti-virus control temporarily, and then try installing again.
