I have been running W-L on a Windows XT SP3 for many years; it has worked fine, and still works fine.

I also have been running W-L 6 64-bit on a Windows 7 Prof laptop w/6GB RAM for about a year. The program had been working fine on the laptop; but recently the program no longer will load. I get a popup that advises I need to login to Fidelity in order to run the program; I fill in thepopup Fidelity login screen, but nothing further happens. I have shut down and rebooted the laptop, but still the W-L program will not load. Any suggestions?

First thing to try is configure user rights as suggested below:

Errors | General > The application can't be opened, the error report dialog pop up.

Next, I'd create a new Windows username and launch WLP from there. Does it work? Then you will need to go through the General troubleshooting procedure (see link above), precisely, step by step, as per "Wealth-Lab crashes on start".

If that didn't help, then you'd need to recall what action(s) on your PC could have affected its configuration/security settings - like file/directory permissions change, antivirus/protection software installed, different username created etc.

To me, this sounds like a Fidelity entitlement problem. Call Fidelity Active Trader Services and have them check your WLP entitlement status.

Hi, guys;

So far, I have done the following:

Per Cone above, I checked w/Fidelity regarding entitlement status. Fidelity says it is OK.

Per Eugene above, I checked my User Rights: All seem to be as they should be.

Per Eugene above, I created a new Windows Username and tried to launch WLP from there: The program loaded and seems to work OK in the New Username mode (but still does not load in the Original Username mode).

Based on that, my next step was to return to Original Username mode, and work through Eugene's above link (i.e. -- Section: Wealth-Lab crashes on start"), but have a question: Item 5 instructs to rename the Default.ws and attempt to restart the program. I show two files in the \Workspace folder: "Market Data Workspace.ws" and "Trading Workspace.ws". Which is the "Default.ws" that should be renamed?

Hi Richard,

It means that you don't have the default workspace i.e. haven't saved it. (That's why the Wiki links stresses "if it exists"). Feel free to skip step 5 then.

Thanks, Eugene.

#6. I renamed the parent directory from WealthLabPro to WealthLabProX; then attempted to launch the program. The program did not launch; however, the program did create a new WealthLapPro folder, including subfolders 1.0.0.0, etc. But as I said, the program still will not launch.

#7. Since Step #6 did not work, I presume Step #7 is not applicable.

#8. I Uninstalled and Reinstalled the program yesterday. That did not resolve the problem.

#9. I clicked on the link to create a Support Ticket, but the website says that this feature is Under Construction.

I called Fidelity Wealth Lab Support. They had me try a few Properties changes, none of which worked; then they basically told me that since the program does work in the NewUserName mode, to just run the program from there. I suppose changing UserNames each time I want to run the program is better than not being able to run the program at all; but that is not a very elegant solution.

Any additional advice?

Edit: Another issue with running the program as NewUserName is that none of my personal Strategies appear to have transferred over to that version. I presume that copying my personal strategy folders from the OrignalUsername version would be a bad idea because something therein might be what is causing the problem? What about copying the strategies from my Windows XP computer? Would there be an issue with using data files from a 32-bit program on the 64-bit program?

There's no problem copying anything over from your \Data\ folder.

1. Are the symptoms still the same as in your first post? i.e., login screen, ...
2. Are you able to Login to Fidelity with WLP from another computer?

Thanks for the walkthrough.

Your understanding is correct.

Normally, I'd ask to erase WLP's main folder completely before reinstallation. However, since program starts in new user mode, that is unnecessary (i.e. there's no conflicting module - or WLP would fail to load in new Windows account just as well).

Right. The data are preserved on your HDD.

Usually it's a "bad" idea - that's why the troubleshooting procedure instructs to copy in chunks to find the culprit. But here it's not the case: renaming the WealthLabPro folder and NOT solving the problem indicates that the culprit is still to be found elsewhere.

No, but based on what you said I do not believe it's going to help.

Yes. I suspect that since you mentioned Fidelity login screen from the start, this might have something to do with a corrupted file that stores sensitive authentication data. For obvious reasons we won't go into the details of resetting them on the public forum, neither does the troubleshooting procedure includes them.

First, please answer Cone's 2 questions in post #7 and then send a letter to info@wealth-lab.com and we'll provide instructions. Hopefully, this helps bring WLP back to life without resorting to the not-so-elegant solution.

Thank you, guys;

Regarding Cone's questions:

1. Yes, the symptoms are the same as the original post: When I click on the WLP desktop icon, I get a popup advising that I must login to Fidelity; I click OK, then a Fidelity login screen pops up; I fill it out and click OK, then everything dies.

2. Yes, I can login to Fidelity from WLP on another computer (my Windows XP desktop). FWIW, I can login to Fidelity from WLP on the problem computer once I get the program to load from the NewUserName mode.

Per your instructions, I will send an e-mail to info@wealth-lab.com and provide my e-mail address so that we can continue in private.

Thanks again for the help.

Bazinga! I received the instructions, and they worked!

Thank you again. You guys are better detectives than Fidelity's WLP Support.

One more item. Upon loading the program, I notice that my personal strategies folder does not appear. Based upon one of the above responses, do I understand correctly that I can copy that folder from my 32-bit Win XP computer to the newly operative 64-bit WLP? Are the directory paths the same for both?

Also, is there anything else I need to do regarding the newly operative WLP (i.e. -- do I need to update/reinstall Extensions, Add-Ins, etc.)?

Again, thank you very much for your help.

Glad to have helped. A watermark file containing Fidelity authentication information has got broken, and removing it fixed WLP. Rarely, but it happens.

Step 7 of the Wiki troubleshooting procedure contains a walkthrough on getting your custom strategies back.

Unless you deleted the WLP main folder under Program Files, I don't think you'll need to reinstall downloaded extensions. Uninstallation keeps them, I believe. If you did, it's just a matter of downloading them from the website.
