Wondering if there has been experience with this. I tried to generate a test FX data set from yahoo using their symbols (from http://finance.yahoo.com/currencies?ltr=1 - and a couple of variations), but am receiving these kinds of errors from the data manager when trying to update:

"GBPUSD=X Error: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found."

Does this mean the software simply is not compatible for yahoo FX and I need to work on the other external provides such as those suggested in the "Data & Data Providers" FAQ page? Or that historical data is not available from Yahoo for FX?

I have been looking at the "Data & Data Providers" FAQ page and am exploring the options list - but always had a lazy preference for Yahoo - due to it being inbuilt in the data manager.

Are the only data available for Yahoo (and Wealth-Data) via the data manager, therefore, subsets from within the predefined classification groups?

Thanks in advance for anyone with experience on this who is willing to assist.

No. I'm at a slight loss as to why you're asking this when the FAQ that you've just mentioned states that Yahoo itself does not return the historical data for many instruments like futures and even contains a procedure to check availability of historical data yourself for any symbol in question:

Is it possible to get the data for futures or Forex from Yahoo?

Just give it a try on GBPUSD=X and I'm sure it's quickly out of question.

Fortunately no. There are numerous provider extensions to be downloaded from our "gallery" aka Extensions section. While Yahoo is not the proper choice for Forex, futures and other specific instruments (it's okay only for stocks), I'm sure you'll find there data providers that deliver Forex rates: Quandl (look for FX symbols on their website), Dukascopy, Forexite, MetaTrader4 (requires MT4 terminal with free data), Finam (in Russian only but has FX), IQFeed (requires paid subscription).
